| IVEL BARBARIANS RFC - COACHING STRUCTURE |
| |
As Club Coaching Coordinator I have a role to ensure that the Coaching structure within the club is robust, progressive and a key factor in ensuring the sustainability of the club in providing talented local players of all ages, but ultimately to support the senior sides within the club. To this end efforts will be channelled into four main areas:
Coach Induction (new coaches working with/under a ‘buddy’ coach or mentor)
-
Balancing Expertise throughout the club
-
Communication of best practice throughout the club
-
Keeping coaches skills up to date (regular attendance at coach development sessions)
Coach Development Plan
In the long term we will hopefully produce a coaching structure which will sustain the club for many years to come. Current players are being encouraged to consider getting involved in coaching so that their experience is retained within the club even when they have retired from playing. Specific aims currently identified are:
- Each squad to have a Lead Coach (at least Level 1 qualified), supported by two coaches who are either at Level 1 or have committed to undertake Level 1. These coaches then become ‘accredited’ by the club. In addition to accredited coaches we would aspire to also have a ‘helper’ category that assists the coaches under coach supervision. This is particular relevant in youth rugby where parents can easily undertake this function.
- All coaches to have access to coaching resources - articles, books, DVDs etc
- Encourage attendance at Continuous Personal Development (CPD) events.
- The club to run at least one CPD event a year at the club and also several “in club” development events.
- Ensure unqualified coaches are encouraged and given the support to enable them to undertake courses (START Rugby, TAG course, Rugby Ready, Level 1).
And perhaps the most important aim,
To develop a common and modern coaching culture and ethos throughout the club.

The cost of the course should be borne initially by each applicant. On successful completion of the course, the club will refund 50% of the cost with the other 50% being refunded after 12 months following a period where newly qualified coaches have delivered coaching to Ivel players.
PLEASE NOTE THAT WHEN COACH LICENSING IS INTRODUCED IN THE NEXT YEAR OR SO YOU MUST HAVE A CURRENT RFU OR EQUIVALENT QUALIFICATION TO BE ABLE TO COACH - PLEASE DO NOT GET INTO THE POSITION WHERE YOU HAVE TO TELL YOUR PLAYERS THAT YOU CAN NO LONGER COACH THEM AND POTENTIALLY LEAVE THEM WITHOUT A COACH!!!

Continuous Professional Development Courses For Coaches |
I have attached course descriptors for the CPD that will be available to your coaches in the future. Half Back Play(Mini, Youth and Adult) will be added to the list.
As I am sure you can appreciate all the courses cannot be delivered at every club. In the medium term I will plan meetings in order that CCCs from different CBs can get together and plan a more strategic approach to delivery of the courses.
In the short term I am seeing which clubs would like to host one of the courses. I will need:
- A date and time for delivery(around 1900hrs is standard).
- Indoor facilities for meet and greet plus video and PowerPoint presentation(we will have a data projector). Tea and coffee would be a bonus.
- Outdoor facility with good lights
- Providing players is optional but I will need to know if players are attending. If no players are provided then coaches will be asked to take part and this will enhance their kinaesthetic learning.
- Minimum of 12 coaches for course to be viable. Course will be advertised locally to bring numbers up if club does not have 12 themselves.
- Kit - bibs, balls, cones. Rope for defence(string will do but not as good)
- Cost will be £15 per coach.
If your club would like to be the first to host one of these new courses or you have any questions please be in touch.
