IVEL BARBARIANS RFC - COACHING STRUCTURE

As Club Coaching Coordinator I have a role to ensure that the Coaching structure within the club is robust, progressive and a key factor in ensuring the sustainability of the club in providing talented local players of all ages, but ultimately to support the senior sides within the club.

I intend to conduct a review of the current coaching set up within the club with the aim to produce a workable plan for the future of coaching at Ivel Barbarians.

This review will effectively be an 'audit' of the established coaches within both the senior and junior clubs. It is stressed that this is not any sort of 'purge' of coaches within the club, merely an exercise to establish our current base level of knowledge and experience. Part of this audit will involve a questionnaire being given to every coach. Questions will include:

Their aims

Their needs

Their opinions about the club

Their role as coaches now and in the future

At the same time it is intended to perform a 'quality check' to ascertain what qualifications our coaches currently have with a view for each of them to develop their skills if so desired.

As CCC I would wish to channel efforts into four main areas:

Coach Induction (new coaches working with/under a 'buddy' coach or mentor)

Balancing Expertise throughout the club

Communication of best practice throughout the club

Keeping coaches skills up to date (regular attendance at coach development sessions)

Aim

My aim will be to produce a coaching structure which will sustain the club for many years to come. Current players will be encouraged to consider getting involved in coaching so that their experience is retained within the club even when they have retired from playing. Specific aims currently identified are:

Each squad to have a Lead Coach (at least Level 1 qualified), supported by two coaches who are either at Level 1 or have committed to undertake Level 1. These coaches then become 'accredited' by the club. In addition to accredited coaches we would aspire to also have a 'helper' category who assists the coaches under coach supervision. This is particularly relevant in youth rugby where parents can easily undertake this function.

All coaches to have access to coaching resources - articles, books, DVDs etc

Encourage attendance at coach development events.

The club to run at least one "in club" development event.

Ensure unqualified coaches are encouraged and given the support to enable them to undertake a START Rugby or TAG course within 12 weeks of being invited to join the coaching set up

And perhaps the most important aim,

To develop a common coaching culture and ethos throughout the club.

Experimental Law Variations - Guide To The New Laws
This season the new experimental laws (ELVs) come into force.  Click the view button to read the guide about them.   Note, ELV 2 & 3, both relating to the maul, will not be introduced below U19.

New Level 1 Coaching Course Pre-Requisite

iRB rugbyready

It has now been agreed by the 3 Unions (WRU, SRU and RFU) Coaching Departments that rugbyready will form part of the induction programme for the UKCC Level 1 qualification.

From September 2008 applicants must have completed the on-line learning module from www.irb.com and from September 2009 applicants will have to have undertaken the 3 hour rugbyready course.

Certification will be requested on the Level 1 as proof of completion.  The rugbyready course replaces the "Tackle Safety" and "Coaching Contact Courses" and is essential for all coaches involved in the game - regardless of their qualification. The emphasis is on safety, with particular regard to the tackle and scrum, and is delivered by trained and qualified Coach Developers and Coach Educators.

The course provides an extensive coaching resource and DVD and certificate of attendance. The cost of the course is £18 (+VAT), and can be arranged at your club through your Community Rugby Coach, Rugby development Officer or regional Coach Development Officer.

Entry Level Referee Award Courses

We are hoping to run Entry Level Referee Award Courses at the club in the near future but require numbers to make the course viable.

The Course is an ideal introduction to refereeing for all levels of referee from Mini/Midi right through the youth age groups and the adult game.

Bring yourself up to date with all the experimental laws (ELVs).

Get the season off to the right start for Ivel Barbarians.
