This was a game played in very hot conditions but still entertaining. Both of the teams had plenty of possession that they failed to capitalise on. Ivel had the opportunity to draw first blood but, unfortunately, fly-half Sam Armitstead missed a penalty. This spurred on Wimborne and they were soon ahead when, through some missed tackles they managed to score a try. The conversion was missed. As the half progressed Ivel gave more of the initiative to the visitors. Despite commanding in the lineouts Ivel still managed to let the half slip through their hands and Wimborne led 17-0 at the break.

The second half started as the first half finished. Ivel had chances but unfortunately spurned them, and Wimborne kept piling on the pressure. There was some relief for the home side when replacement, and club stalwart, Elwyn White finished off a breakaway move. This was nothing more than Ivel deserved and Sam Armitstead’s conversion gave hope of a fight-back. This was not to be. Ivel kept on attacking but all too often the player with the ball was isolated and possesion was lost. Wimborne took advantage of this as continued pressure from the Dorset side forced gaps to appear in the home defence. Wimborne managed to score another 12 points without answer. Eventually Ivel ran out of time, and luck, camped on the Wimborne 5 metre line. The game could have been a lot more one-sided but Ivel kept taking their defence up to Wimborne’s attack.

The large crowd watching the game were all in agreement with Ivel’s Chairman, Harold Williams, when he described referee Shane Lewis’ performance as the best we have seen at The Showground for many a year.

Prior to the game today presentations were made to the winners of the recent shirt sponsor draw. Gary Salter from shirt sponsor draw winners Milstead Langdon was joined by Peter Rowsell (main Club sponsor) and Harold Williams (Chairman) for a presentation and photograph with the first team wearing their new shirts. Third place winner Graham Loder (Loder’s of Yeovil) was presented with a replica team shirt. Unfortunately David Rivett (David C Rivett – Funeral Directors) was unable to receive his second place presentation. Get well soon David.

The ball-boys for today’s game came from Ivel’s Under 9’s, Under 7’s and Under 6 squads. Thank you boys for your help.
