This was a must win match for both teams, rooted at the wrong end of the league. Ivel had a strong squad to choose from and it showed.
Unlike their last match, Ivel came out strong from the beginning, and kept playing to their own game-plan and their strengths. It was Taunton, however, that took the lead. Fly-half Robbie Miller scored a penalty. This spurred Ivel on and they managed to open their own account with a try from number eight Paul Mortensen.
The visitors turned the heat back up and, just before half-time scored a try through their own number eight Grant Gibson. Half-time 5-8
The turn-around helped Ivel more than Taunton. Fly-half Tom Lane scored a penalty following an infringement by Taunton. Ivel’s man-of-the-match Andrew Cook led from the front with huge tackles and determination. Ivel managed to make use of decisions going their way. A fantastic piece of chasing fully three quarters the length of the pitch saw Ivel scrum-half John Evans score the pick of the tries. A third try came from fly-half Tom Lane.
Captain Jamie Crichton said: “The performance today was 100 per cent better than last week. It showed that when we play our game we can beat teams.”

Ivel 2XV 12 vs Somerton 17 Saturday 29th November 2008 |
| |
This was a game of two halves for Ivel. In the first the forwards gave ground to a stronger Somerton pack. Somerton’s points came from them taking advantage of possession won and tackles missed. It wasn’t that Ivel were a weaker team, they just didn’t take advantage of the few possession opportunities they had. Both sides struggled with passages of play disrupted by infringements and penalties. It was loose tackles that allowed the visitor’s flanker to score the first points of the game. He evaded some Ivel players to touch down. The conversion was missed. The next try came from handling errors by the Ivel defence allowing the Somerton fly-half in to score and then convert.
Half-time 0-12
The second half started with Ivel coming out with a stronger mentality. A change of prop for Ivel, Malcolm Pain replaced by Olly Hodgson, saw different tactics employed in the scrum and things stabilised. Ivel started to exert some of their own pressure and it paid off when replacement Jo Covu touched down in the corner. Somerton fought back and managed to score again through their winger when he evaded tackles and split the defensive line. The conversion was missed. Then, following a succession of penalties, Neil Coram touched down by the post and Tom Lane added the conversion. Despite the efforts of Ivel’s man of the match Martin Coles the game ended with Somerton pressurising in the Ivel 22 and securing the win. This was a match Ivel needed to win; points are precious in the league at this time of the season.

The travelling Ivel second team arrived at Crewkerne with high hopes of securing two points to lift them from the foot of the Tribute Somerset 2 South table and above local rivals Martock. The day started on a high; a broken ticket machine at the pay and display car park giving the Ivel players free bays for the afternoon.
The first league match of 2009 started off with an early try for the Crewkerne side, a chip over the top of the Ivel defence and a lucky bounce led to 5 points under the posts, which was then converted to make the score 7-0 in favour of the home side. Too many times this season Ivel have conceded prematurely, which later on in the game has proved the difference between them and the opposition.
Further poor tackling in the first half led to two more tries for the home team, to gain a lead of 19-0 approaching half time. With work to do in the second half, Ivel brought on replacement full back Mark Law, now in bearded guise, to help augment the Ivel defence.
Ivel did not concede a further point in the game, owing much to better concentration and awareness around the field from the Ivel players.
The highlight of the game for Ivel came when fly half Dan Hughes took a tap penalty from 22 yards out. The number 10 neatly sailed through the Crewkerne defence; the proverbial 'hot knife through butter' being used to describe the solo-effort.
With thirteen and a half minutes to go in the game, and Ivel clearly on the ascendency, a penalty close to the posts was converted for three points, 12 points now the deficit for the Barbarians. However, an area for Ivel which needs much improvement was in the breakdown, the ball just not coming out fast enough to allow the Ivel backs a chance to close the gap and potentially win the game away from Crewkerne.
Man of match Andrew 'Biscuit' Cook again shone from openside flanker, putting in a consistently good performance this season. With just over half the season now passed, key games against Somerton, Taunton and Wells will be scalps that Ivel have to take in order to stand any chance of consolidation in Somerset 2. |

Ivel 2XV 0 vs Bridgwater & Albion 3XV 67 Saturday 14th March 2009 |

Ivel’s 2XV were scratching around for players just before kick off to make up the team and just about managed it with minutes to spare. Bridgwater and Albion, “The Dirt-trackers”, as you would expect from a team second in the league, gave Ivel a tough time but it was a good game nevertheless. Straight from the kick-off the visitors put Ivel under pressure and were camped in their half. Pressure became points and a flurry of tries, with conversions, followed. Ivel tried hard to stem the tide and went down to 14 men as James New was sin-binned following infringements at the break-down. Ivel managed to take a bit of control back and, for a period, forced the visitors back. The first half finished with Bridgwater wresting the game back and pinning Ivel back.
The second half began in the same vein as the first half finished. Bridgwater showed again their solid team work and the benefit of training together. Ivel showed flashes of rugby with a couple of new faces standing out along with “old” heads Malcolm Pain and Emlyn Kuhn acting as pivots. Captain for the day Andrew “Biscuit” Cook was putting in important tackles and acting as a focal point for the team. First half replacement Luke Hodgson had added some bite in the break-down. The downside to this positive play for Ivel was the visitors stepping up their game. When Ivel did have breaks they would get so far then, unfortunately, either drop the ball or knock it on. The game finished with Ivel playing to maintain some respectability and they managed it, despite the score.
