Crewkerne 2XV  17  vs  Ivel 3XV  20    Saturday 6th September 2008

A well-showered Crewkerne pitch played host for this opening day friendly encounter between two sides shaking off the summer cobwebs and hoping for a win.  Uncontested scrums were the order of the day owing to a depleted Crewkerne side and after a slow start,  Ivel gained a penalty in the Crewkerne half which was smoothly kicked over by Andy Robins to give Ivel the lead.  Crewkerne then took the initiative early in the first half by scoring from a midfield break, not helped by poor Ivel tackling.  The home side scored again to extend their lead. Ivel then picked up their game,  with continued phases putting pressure on the Crewkerne line.  The result was a neatly crafted try allowing openside flanker Louis Jones to score; the number 7 playing his first full senior game for the club.

A more disciplined Ivel defence in the second half managed to contain several Crewkerne atttacks,  however the good work was affected by a number of offside decisions against them.  An extra gear was found by Ivel when Troy Fowler was sent through to re-gain the lead.  The joy was short-lived as Crewkerne once again scored: a cruel bounce allowed Crewkerne to kick through and capitalise on poor Ivel reactions. With the score at 17-15 and the end looming, an Ivel scrum 5 metres out from the home try line gave them a chance to take the spoils. The opportunity was well taken by scrum half John Evans, who touched down in the corner to earn the Baa Baas a shaky first day victory and bring relief to the faces of an anxious away support.

Ivel 3XV  45  vs  Wiveliscombe  19   Saturday 11th October 2008

Pictures from Dave Fowler

This was the game that nearly didn’t start. Wiveliscombe had made the trip form the other side of Taunton to find a home side numbering just ten, but with five minutes to go, Ivel’s numbers swelled to sixteen. And what a sixteen. The Ivel front eight had a combined age of 200 years plus. Harold “H” Williams, Malcolm Pain and Roger “Popeye” Law are on the experienced side of fifty with the rest of the pack having an average age of thirty. Even Club President Colin Hendrie brought his boots back out again to help ensure the match happnened.

Wiveliscombe travelled with a strong team and, when Ivel trotted out, thought they must stand a fairly good chance of a win. But looks can be deceptive. The game was evenly matched with the sides trading points on a frequent basis. But then Joe “Lightning” Covu opened up his pace. And the tries really flowed.

Some close work with good communication and slick passing saw Joe total up five tries in the match. He managed to convert four of them before handing the point scoring duties over to Shaun Rudd, Captain for the day and Man of the Match Craig Fellows.  Both Shaun and Craig scored a try apiece with Craig notching one conversion.

This was truly a game of allsorts but the mixture of ages and experience for Ivel gelled and certain players shone such as Sean and Craig Fellows (both former Ivel Colts coming back) and Stewart Dury standing out.

We also had the sight of, for the first time this season, two families playing for the same Ivel team. Not just the Fellows previously mentioned but also Roger, Mark and Barry Law turning out. Barry returning after two years out following major surgery on a broken arm.

A positive and friendly game that could see a few players making more appearances for Ivel. And not just for the 3rds.
