Ivel  vs  Wells  vs  Weston-Super-Mare    Sunday 5th October 2008

On a wet and blustery Sunday Ivel Under 10’s played their first match of the new season at Wells RFC against Wells and Weston-Super-Mare. The new season had brought new challenges to the players; they can now compete for the ball in the line out and push in the scrum so this game was a new experience for all the players.

The first game was against Wells. Both teams started well but Ivel took the lead in the first half with a fine run by Elliot Berryman after some great work in the tight by Cameron Barrett and Oliver Perkins. The game was played a fast pace with both sides trying to run the ball wide and after some lovely passing by Daniel Long, Tom Parnell and Zac Withers Aidan Smith sprinted over in the corner.

The second half saw Wells come out with all guns blazing and after some intense pressure by Wells and some brilliant tackling by Sam Hourse, Will and Jack Smeeton Wells scored a try in the corner. Both sides were now playing some fine rugby despite the muddy conditions and the Wells pressure paid off when they scored with the last play of the game. Wells 10 vs Ivel 10

The second game was against a well drilled and physically strong W-S-M side. This was evident from the start when some very poor tackling allowed the W-S-M side to take a very early lead. W-S-M continued to apply the pressure and after some very determined tackling by Elliot Berryman and Jack Dicker W-S-M scored again.  However, the Ivel side did not let their heads go down but bounced back with very strong runs by Myles Haiselden and Harry McHugh which set up Oliver Perkins for the first of his 2 tries. This spurred the Ivel side on and again after some terrific runs by Cameron Barrett and Jack Smeeton Oliver Perkins went over again for his second try.

The Ivel tails were up and after some great work in the tight by the forwards the ball was passed to Tom Parnell who sprinted for the line and scored. With only a few minutes left W-S-M pounded the Ivel line but some fantastic tackling prevented them from crossing it but with the last play of the game W-S-M managed to force their way over for the try.   W-S-M 15 vs Ivel 15

Ivel squad Elliot Berryman, Myles Haiselden, Tom Parnell, Oliver Perkins, Jack Smeeton, Aidan Smith, Zac Withers, Harry McHugh, Daniel Long, Sam Hourse, Hugo Hammond, Cameron Barrett, Jack Dicker, Will

Ivel U10 at Midsomer Norton Tournament   2nd Place   Sunday 12th October 2008

Ivel Under10’s played at the annual Midsomer Norton tournament on Sunday 12th October and they were looking to improve on their second place from last year’s tournament.

In near perfect conditions for playing rugby the Ivel side started their campaign against the tournament favourites Midsomer Norton. The game was played at a high tempo with both sides producing some very high calibre rugby and the game was evenly matched, but the Midsomer Norton side managed to score a try with just a minute to go so Ivel had to push for a try but couldn’t manage it.

Ivel’s next game was against Chew which they won 10 v 0 with tries from Cameron Barrett and Harry Mchugh. Ivel were now on a roll and faced a well organised Frome side and won a hard fought game 10 v 5 with tries from Cameron Barrett and Elliot Berryman.

Ivel’s next opponents were Melksham who had won their previous 2 games but again Ivel came out on top with Elliot Berryman scoring 2 tries.

Ivel’s next opponents were Walcot and the Ivel team continued their winning streak with a 15 v 0 victory with Cameron Barrett scoring another 2 ties and the very quick Tom Parnell scoring another.

Next to face Ivel were a very big and physical Warminster side but Ivel proved far too strong and came out 20 v 5 winners with tries from Lewis Fry, Jack Smeaton and 2 from Elliot Berryman.

Ivel’s final game was against a very quick Yatton side who had won most of their games so it was going to be tough for the Ivel side. The game started well with Elliot Berryman scything through the Yatton defence to open the score and this was followed by a great try by the hard working Harry McHugh. But the Yatton side came back strongly and scored two quick tries so the game was finely balanced. Both side were desperate to win and gave it their all but with a minute to go the skilful and fearless Zac Walters scored to make the final score 15 v 10 to Ivel.  The tournament was run on a league system and Ivel had come 2nd for a second year running but the Ivel players had had a great day and had played some fantastic rugby and are already looking forward to competing in next years tournament.

Ivel Squad Elliot Berryman, Tom Parnell, Jack Smeeton, Aidan Smith, Zac Withers, Harry McHugh, Sam Hourse, Cameron Barrett, Lewis Fry, Henry Bowditch, Archie, Robert

Ivel U10 vs Frome U10    Sunday 16th November 2008

Ivel U10’s visited Frome RFC. Both teams agreed to play two matches of ten minutes each half.

The first game produced some great rugby from both sides.  There was some good ball handling skills from Ivel where we put the first points on the board by great running from the backs.  Frome showed a good understanding of rucking and mauling, which is normally a good part of Ivel play.  Cameron and Aiden ran in tries from wide positions, which showed some good off loads by all players today.  Ollie and Myles played well with some good support and hard work in the rucks and mauls.  Both sides were willing to run the ball so the defence from both sides had to be tight and work well as a unit.  All players worked well in this game but Will Rendell and Jack Smeeton deserve a special mention for their overall work rate and tackling (well done).  This game was a good test for us as Frome are an organised squad, however, Ivel proved to be better with good off loading play.  Ivel were winners by 15 - 0 (Try scorers - Aiden Smith, Harry McHugh, Cameron Barrett).

The second game, again, showed both sides could run with the ball and both sides had to put in try saving tackles.  Hugo, Archie, Dan, Sam, Tom and Elliot all played well in this game with some good running in the backs.  Myles did some fantastic mauling with good support from all which gave us the edge and allowed Ivel’s backs to show their skills.  Again our discipline and organisation was to prove too strong although Ivel did have to work hard to gain victory for this tough fought match.  Result 20 - 5 (Try scorers Tom Parnell, Cameron Barrett, Elliot Berryman, Ollie Perkins).

All Ivel players are to be congratulated on both their individual skills and especially their team effort.  There was some very good free flowing rugby by Ivel today.

Ivel squad: Cameron Barrett, Myles Haiseldon, Hugo Hammond, Daniel Long, Harry McHugh, Sam Nourse, Tom Parnell, Jack Smeeton, Aiden Smith, Archie Mitchell, Zac Withers, William Rendell, Oliver Perkins, Elliot Berryman.

Ivel U10  vs  North Dorset U10     Sunday 23rd November 2008

On a sunny but cold and blustery Sunday morning Ivel under 10s hosted Noth Dorset under 10s hoping to produce a performance to better England’s the day before and both sides did just that!!

North Dorset had brought a strong squad for the game and Ivel had a few players out due to a nasty stomach bug and injuries. The game was going to be a story of two halves with a strong wind blowing down the slope. North Dorset played with the wind and slope first half and took a 2 tries to nil lead with some very strong running and link play but Ivel didn’t help matters with some weak tackling.

However, with half time came a change of ends and the advantage of the wind and the slope. The game started well with a typical galloping run by fly half Elliot Berryman to score from the kick off which spurred the side on. The game was played a furious pace with some very strong and determined running from Daniel Long, Myles Haiselden and Will Rendel and the Ivel side started to tackle lead by Jack Smeeton, Aiden Smith and Harry McHugh. The Ivel side started to press on the North Dorset line and the pressure paid off with a powerful charge to line by Harry McHugh to score. The first game was a 10 all draw which was a fair refection of the game.

Both side had a 5 minute break to have a team talk and reorganise their teams to start the second game. Ivel started up the hill against the wind and once again found themselves a try down in the first 2 minutes. The score could have been more if it wasn’t for some brilliant play in the tight by Ollie Perkins and Zac Withers. The Ivel players tackled their hearts out, especially Hugo Hammond and Tom Parrnell and managed to restrict the visitors to just one try.

The second half started and Ivel pressed the North Dorset line straight away and Elliot Berryman and Daniel long were lucky not to score. But after some great running and passing from Jack Smeeton and Ollie Perkins Harry McHugh went in for his well deserved second try. The game ended with both sides absolutely shattered having put 100% into both games and the final score was affair reflection on both games and both sides should be congratulated on their skill, determination and passion for the game (England take note!!!!!)

Ivel Squad:   Elliot Berryman, Myles Haiselden, Tom Parnell, Oliver Perkins, Jack Smeeton, Aidan Smith, Zac Withers, Harry McHugh, Daniel Long, Hugo Hammond, Will Rendal.

Ivel U10  vs  Sherborne U10      Sunday 7th December 2008

On a very cold and frosty Sunday morning Ivel Under 10s prepared to play Sherborne Under 10s in the local derby, Ivel hoping to make up for the seniors team loss last week. The game was delayed to allow for the pitch to de-frost which gave the coaches a chance to thoroughly warm up their players.

The game eventually go underway with both sides determined to play so fast open rugby. Sherborne took an early lead despite some great tackling from Harry McHugh, Jack Smeeton and Aidan Smith. The game was played a furious pace and both side were very committed and determined to win. Sherborne took a one try to nil lead into the second half but some determined rucking by Lewis Fry, Will Randel and Ollie Perkins lead to Cameron Barrett charging over for Ivel’s first try. This speared Ivel on and after some powerful breaks by Tom Parnell, Zac Withers and Elliot Berryman Harry McHugh scored in the corner and the game ended 10 vs 5 to Ivel.

Both sides agreed to play a further 5 minute a half game to allow all the players to enjoy the rugby. Sherborne came out of the blocks the quickest and scored two quick tries. But Ivel never gave in and came close to scoring with some great runs by Myles Haiselden, Sam Hourse and Hugo Hammond but couldn’t cross the line. Sherborne scored a break away try to make the final score Ivel 0 vs Sherborne 15. Both teams play some great rugby and it is a credit to all the player to produce the high standard of rugby in those conditions.

Ivel Squad:  Elliot Berryman, Myles Haiselden, Tom Parnell, Oliver Perkins, Jack Smeeton, Aidan Smith, Zac Withers, Harry McHugh, Hugo Hammond, Will Rendal, Lewis Fry, Cameron Barrett, Sam Hourse

Ivel U10  vs  Bridport U10     Sunday 18th January 2009

On Sunday 18th January Ivel Under 10’s hosted Bridport in a rearranged fixture. The conditions were perfect for fast running rugby and both teams didn’t disappoint.

The first game started with Ivel having the slope and the wind and they took full advantage and after some great work in the tight by Oliver Perkins and Cameron Barrett scored two quick tries. But Bridport came back strongly and mauled their way into a scoring position and went over for a try just before half time.

Bridport started the second half strongly and some determined tackling by Daniel Long, Archie Mitchell, Myles Haiselden and Lewis Fry managed to stem the Bridport onslaught. This spurred the Ivel side on after some great work by Zac Withers, Tom Parnell and Elliot Berryman Ivel managed to score a further 3 tries.

Try scorers   Harry HcHugh, Oliver Perkins, Tom Parnell, Elliot Berryman 2

Final score Ivel 25 vs Bridport 5

Both sides caught their breaths and prepared their players for the final game. The ivel team made some changes to play some of the less experienced players and they certainly came up to the mark. The second game started the way the first game ended with both sides playing some very good rugby. Ivel took a 2 try advantage after some powerful driving in the tight by Robert Samways, Will Rendall and John Hayes. Bridport came back strongly and pulled back two tries and were pressuring the Ivel line but some strong running by Aidan Smith, Harry McHugh and Sam Hourse drove the Ivel side up the pitch which allowed  Ivel to score a further 3 tries.

Ivel U10  vs  Taunton U10     Sunday 25th January 2009

Pictures from Steve Berryman

This day was long awaited because we had not played Taunton this season.  The game started off at a fast pace with both teams showing some good skills and technique, especially Taunton in the mauls.  Ivel had to make some good tackles in defence as Taunton’s attack in the backs was very good.  Ivel used the ball well by off loading in the tackles as there was always support for the tackled player.  The score for the first game was Ivel 15 – Taunton 10.  Ivel scorers were Cameron, Tom and Aiden.

The second game was much like the first, both teams working hard to gain ground with the ball and looking for opportunities to out play each other.  This game has to go to Tom as he scored all three tries to gain the win.  However, it was made possible by the hard graft of the forwards.  A little word of praise for Sam who played exceptionally on the wing, showing that hard work in training makes life easy during a game.  The score for the second game was Ivel 15 – Taunton 5.  Ivel scorer was Tom

The third game was as fast as the first game, credit to all the players.  There were some great individual efforts by players.  Harry ran almost the length of the pitch, but unfortunately handed off to score the try.  The ref (Fran) did not give the try, but a penalty to Taunton (unlucky Harry – good effort though).  Taunton had more defending to do in this game, but Ivel’s strength came good with Cameron forcing his way over for a try.  Aiden stood in as scrum half; a scrum was given to Ivel about 5m from Taunton’s try line,  Aiden saw a gap between the Taunton scrum half and fly half, went for it and scored.  The score for the third game was Ivel 15 – Taunton 5.  Ivel scorers were Cameron, Ollie and Aiden.

I would like to add that both teams showed fantastic commitment and more importantly, enjoyment for the game.  The teams were equal on ability and played with good temperament.  All players are to be congratulated on their performances.  WELL DONE!!!!

Fran

Ivel U10  vs  Midsomer Norton U10     Sunday 1st February 2009

Ivel Under 10s hosted Midsomer Norton on an extremely cold and blustery Sunday morning. The last time the 2 sides met was in the Midsomer Norton tournament where the Midsomer Norton side were victorious so the Ivel side were looking to avenge that defeat.

Due to the weather both sides were keen to play and Ivel started the better scoring a quick try after some great work out wide by Dan Long, Elliot Berryman and Tom Parnell. However the Midsomer Norton side came back and scored within the minute. Both teams played some very aggressive and committed rugby with the skill levels being very high. Both sides were determined to win and the Ivel side lead by Will Rendall, Harry McHugh, Zac Withers and Cameron Barrett managed to score a further 2 tries but Midsomer Norton came back and scored 2 tries to make honours even in the first game.

Final Score Ivel 15 vs Midsomer Norton 15   -  Try Scorers Cameron Barrett, Daniel Long, Lewis Fry

The second started with Midsomer Norton taking a well deserved lead after some poor tackling by the Ivel side. But Ivel responded and scored straight from the kick off. Midsomer Norton applied pressure on the Ivel line but some tremendous tackling by Oliver Perkins, Aidan Smith, Sam Hourse and Archie Mitchell managed to keep them at bay. This seemed to encouraged the Ivel side who managed to score a further 2 tries and finish the game victorious. Both side played some fantastic rugby and the crowd really enjoyed the fast flowing and skilful rugby produced by both teams.

Final Score Ivel 15 vs Midsomer Norton 5   -  Try Scorers Lewis Fry, Harry McHugh 2

Ivel squad Elliot Berryman, ,Tom Parnell, Oliver Perkins, Aidan Smith, Zac Withers, Harry McHugh, Daniel Long, Sam Hourse, Hugo Hammond, Cameron Barrett, Will Rendall, Robert Samways, John Hayes, Lewis Fry, Archie Mitchell

Ivel vs Weymouth

Ivel’s first game was against a large Weymouth side. The game was played a fast pace with Ivel scoring 3 tries in the first half with some fantastic work in the forwards by Myles Haiselden, Cameron Barrett and Ollie Perkins which allowed the “pacey” backs to have the room to show their handling skills. The second half continued the same way as the first with another two tries but all credit to Weymouth they never gave in and scored a try in the last play of the game.

Score      Ivel 25 vs Weymouth 5

Scorers      Cameron Barrett, Myles Haiselden, Lewis Fry, Dan Long 2

Ivel vs Blandford

Ivel’s second game was against Blandford who only had 8 players. The Ivel team started where they left off against Weymouth with 3 quick tries in first 5 minutes of the game. The extra space created by only having 8 players allowed the game to flow on a very small pitch and Ivel took advantage of this by scoring a further 4 tries. The Ivel side played some very skilful, fast flowing and powerful rugby with the forwards and backs inter passing and offloading in the tackle to produce some great rugby.

Score       Ivel 35 vs Blandford 5

Scorers      Lewis Fry, Jack Smeeton, Zac Withers, Harry McHugh, Elliot Berryman 3

Ivel squad

Elliot Berryman, Tom Parnell, Oliver Perkins, Aidan Smith, Harry McHugh, Daniel Long, Sam Hourse, Cameron Barrett, Robert Samways, John Hayes, Lewis Fry, Archie Mitchell, Henry Bowditch, Jack Smeeton, Myles Haiselden

Sherborne U10  vs  Ivel U10  vs  Wimborne U10     Sunday 15th March 2009

On a glorious Sunday morning Ivel Under 10s travelled the short distance to Sherborne play a 3-way match against Wimborne and Sherborne. Ivel knew they were going to be in for a tough encounter because the last time Ivel played Sherborne the honours were even and Wimborne are one of the best sides in the area.

Ivel vs Wimborne

The conditions were perfect for fast flowing rugby and spectators were not disappointed. Both sides were keen to run the ball and the skill level was extremely high with the ball moving to one end of the pitch to the other. Some great forward play by Cameron Barrett, Will Rendall and Ollie Perkins allowed Ivel’s back line to apply to the Wimborne line. The pressure increased which allowed Harry McHugh to go over the 1st of his two tries. Ivel continued to play some great flowing rugby and this created the chance for Harry to score his second try and for centre Elliot Berryman to score his first.

Score    Ivel 15 vs Wimborne 0

Scorers   Harry McHugh 2 Elliot Berryman

Ivel vs Sherborne

Ivel’s final game was against local rivals Sherborne, both teams had beaten Wimborne so it was nicely balanced for a tough encounter. The game started at a furious pace and Ivel knew they were in a game. Some heroic tackling from Daniel Long, Henry Bowditch, Zac Withers, Sam Hourse and Tom Parnell stopped Sherborne from tacking and early lead. This drove Ivel on and they scored a try which was cleverly worked between Aidan Smith and Daniel Long which allowed Elliot Berryman to burst through the Sherborne defence to score. However, Sherborne replied immediately and scored straight away but Ivel passed the ball to Lewis Fry who powered his way through the Sherborne team to score. Ivel moved the ball wide again and Harry McHugh popped up to score in the corner. Sherborne scored again but it was to late and Ivel held on for victory. All three teams played some fantastic rugby which was played the spirit of rugby and all the players can be very proud of the way they played.

Score    Ivel 15 vs Sherborne 10

Scorers    Harry McHugh, Elliot Berryman, Lewis Fry

Ivel Squad

Elliot Berryman, Tom Parnell, Oliver Perkins, Aidan Smith, Harry McHugh, Daniel Long, Sam Hourse, Cameron Barrett, John Hayes, Lewis Fry, Archie Mitchell, Henry Bowditch, Myles Haiselden, Hugo Hammond
