First match of the session was a double header against Weston-Super-Mare and Wells.  Ivel's pack dominated the scums in both games and the backs made excellent use of the possession with Ivel winning both games.  Ivel 14 W-S-M 0 and Ivel 21 Wells 14

Match 1 North Dorset A 42 Ivel 0

Match 2 North Dorset B 5 Ivel 14

In the 1st match a well drilled North Dorset side made good use of their possession scoring 6 unmatched tries.  The score line did not reflect Ivel's efforts and the forward securing good 1st and 2nd phase ball and some excellent tackling by the backs.  Ivel came close to a consolation try in the second half but the grounding was at the bottom of a messy ruck and the referee was unsighted. In the second match

North Dorset played the balance of their squad and Ivel swapped players in positions in an attempt to improve the teams balance.  These changes lead to a much closer contest with Ivel just edging it.

An excellent day for rugby and the game was played at a good tempo.  Ivel dominated the scrums  and rucks, but poor tackling resulted in Frome finishing two converted tries ahead.  Ivel's tries were scored by Cameron, Ben and Callum and were all converted by Ben.  James was Ivel's man of the match.  An excellent days rugby despite the result and many thanks to the parents for travelling to Frome for what, but for the Aldon Horse Trials, should have been a home match

U12 Somerset Cup Tournament - Wells RFC     Sunday 29th March 2009

In a challenging initial group stage Ivel lost to Winscombe (the eventual Cup Winners) and Keynsham and were then seeded into the Shield Competition for the afternoon.

The first match of the afternoon was against Wells, the tournament hosts.  Ivel won good ball mixed up their attack with strong rucking and mauling from the forwards and then the backs spreading the ball wide with both wingers getting involved (perhaps a first for the season!).   Wells competed throughout and Ivel's defence matched their attack with excellent tackling and counter mauling and rucking.  Ivel ran out eventual winners 25 to 15.

After a short break Ivel then took on Yatton.  Yatton's pack was impressive and they took an early lead however, Ivel stuck to their task and competed at every phase.  In the second half Ivel managed to cancel out Yatton's dominance in the forwards and eventually scored to level the match with the final score being 5 to 5.

With a win and a draw, Ivel were now reliant on Wells winning or Yatton winning by a difference of only one try in order to win the Shield.  The Ivel players (and parents/coaches) cheered for Wells throughout the match and, whilst they seemed somewhat bemused, this seemed to lift Wells and they won convincing.

Connor Bell was Ivel's "Man of the Tournament" for his consistency throughout both in defence and attack and for his repeated counter mauling against Yatton which got Ivel back into the game - very impressive for a winger.

U12 Squad:
