Ivel U13  17   vs  Bridgwater U13   5       Sunday 28th September 2008

Pictures From Rich Greengrow

The first game of the season for Ivel’s Under 13’s was against Bridgewater at home.  As the mist began to clear and sun came out so did Ivel’s determination to win.  After a bit of a slow start and with Bridgewater getting the first try, Ivel realized that they needed to really start playing.

Steve Willetts took advantage of his speed and determination and got Ivel’s first try.  This was followed by another by Connor McAlpine who also did a superb run.  James Robins converted the try making the score 12 – 5 to Ivel.

The leap ahead spurred Ivel on and Dan Ogden got the final try making the score 17-5 to Ivel.  This was a great start to the season for Ivel Under 13’s as they get used to playing on a full size pitch and is hopefully an indication of more to come.

Ivel U13  7  vs  North Dorset U13  40    Sunday 12th October 2008

Pictures from Rich Greengrow

This was the second game of the 2008 season and was against North Dorset.

With a slow start from Ivel, North Dorset managed to find their feet and did well in the close game. Ivel’s rucking and mauling was good but they failed to halt the quick break away from North Dorset which gave them a try each time. Ivel’s positional awareness and application was found wanting on occasions.

The second half started well (with a half time motivational chat!!). Ivel's line out work was good and they held their own in the scrummage and they got the ball out wide.  Ivel scored a try and came within inches of another try five minutes later.

A few lessons learnt from this game should help in future matches.

Our third game of the season took us to Taunton and was the best the U13 had played so far.  The score does not tell the whole story as throughout the game Ivel had the majority control but just failed to finish off with a try.  Taunton scored a quick breakaway try in both halves to take the win.  This was a much improved performance by an Ivel side who played with determination and heart.

Ivel U13  37  vs  Sherborne U13  0      Sunday 9th November 2008

The game started at a fast pace with Sherborne moving the ball well round the pitch.  An opportunity was presented to Steve Willets, who sprinted down the right wing and scored Ivel’s first try.   When the game re-commenced Steve was soon presented with another opportunity and scored his 2nd try, again on the right wing.  Ivel were spurred on to maintain their hold on the game and Connor McAlpine scored 2 more tries on the left wing before half-time.

In the second half, Ivel maintained their focus and worked hard to keep Sherborne out of the game.  There followed a determined try by Dan Ogden, followed by 2 further tries by Connor, one converted by Kyran Rooke.   Throughout the game the team communicated well, made some strong tackles and fought hard to gain valuable ground.    The final score was 37 Ivel – 0 Sherborne.

After a couple of difficult seasons the Ivel U13’s have shown their determination to work hard and take the game seriously and are really beginning to see results.  Todays match was the biggest score the team has had for a long time.

Ivel U13  12  vs  Frome U13  15        Sunday 16th November 2008

The game against Frome wasn’t going to be easy, but Ivel contine to improve their game all the time.  Ivel had control of the ball for most of the match and were the stronger team overall, really working together as a team and reading the game well.  There were some moments when frustrations from both sides boiled over and caused one or two issues.  Ivel never gave up and played with clear determination right up to the final whistle.  The final score was Frome 15 Ivel 12.  Ivel scorers were Steve and Connor.

On a cold and blustery day Ivel U13’s faced Weymouth at home.  Last season Weymouth and Ivel were evenly matched so with the improvement the Ivel team has made this season the game was going to be interesting.

Within 2 minutes of the kick off ‘Woody’ (Ben Woods) streaked down the right hand wing to get the first try.  James Robins converted the try with ease.  This got the game off to a thundering start for Ivel.  Most of the game was played on the right wing and it was evident that Connor McAlpine, out towards the left wing, was starting to get cold and a little bored, until the ball came his way not long before half time.  Connor stormed up the left hand wing and scored the second try which was again converted by James.

The second half began with Ivel in the lead by 14 points.  Weymouth had a couple of big players on their team but the bigger they are the harder they fall, as Ashley Harvey demonstrated.  Ashley is the smallest player on the Ivel team but his game is improving with every match he plays.  Ashley had no problem bringing one of the biggest opposition players down.   Although Ivel’s game became a little inconsistent they were determined to win and soon Connor set up Ivel’s third try for Steve Willets to claim.  This was followed by 2 further impressive tries by Ivel, one by Dan Ogden and the final try by Ashley Harvey.  James was fortunate to convert one of these tries.

The final score was 31 - 0 to Ivel.

Ivel U13  55  vs  Chard U13  7      Sunday 14th December 2008

Ivel have improved significantly this season as could be seen in the match against Chard this weekend.  Chard started well keeping the ball moving but an opportunity arose for Ivel to get the ball out towards the wing and for Steve Willets to get the first try.  By half time Ivel were up by 31 points.  Not long into the second half, Chard got a try and converted it to make the score Ivel 31 Chard 7.  Ivel ever determined went on to score 4 more tries making the final score Ivel 55 Chard 7.

Man of the Match was awarded to Alex Voss for his sheer determination as a forward.

This was Tom Watkins last match with the team as he and his family move to Australia for a couple of years.  Tom was given a hearty send off by the team.

Weymouth U13  7  vs  Ivel U13  21     Sunday 11th January 2009

Due to the weather only half of the pitch was playable, so it was decided to use the good half to allow the teams to have a match.

This was the first run out for the Ivel team this year. The game started slowly, with Ivel dominating the rucks and mauls, but their decision making and handling letting them down.   After a spell of Ivel pressure Weymouth managed to steal the ball and with a few good passes ran up the other end of the pitch and score.

Ivel continued to press, but time and time again the ball was either lost or dropped on the Weymouth line. It looked like Ivel were never going to score. The second half started where the first left off, with Ivel pressurizing the opposition at every opportunity.  Eventually the pressure paid off, with Ivel running 3 quick tries well scored by Conner McAlpine, Ashley Harvey and Steve Willets, all converted by James Robins.

The final score was 21 - 7 to Ivel. This was a good start to the second half of the season and a much needed game to blow the Christmas cobwebs (and turkey) away.

Winscombe U13  34  vs  Ivel U13  0     Sunday 18th January 2009

A full team travelled up to Winscombe despite the bad storm the night before and questions in their mind whether the pitch would be playable.  When we got there only one pitch was in use so we had to double up allowing the U14’s to play first.  By 1145 the game got underway and it didn’t take long to realise that Ivel hadn’t quite woken up! Within a short period of time Winscombe got their first try followed by three others by half time.  Ivel struggled against a bigger, more aggressive side.  By the end of the game the score was 34 Winscombe Ivel 0.  Ivel will put this game down to experience and look forward to the return match at home in February.

Ivel U13  10  vs  Swanage & Wareham U13  21     Sunday 15th February 2009

This was an additional game for Ivel in the fixtures calendar this year.  Having not played Swans before the team was an unknown quantity. The final score was Swans 21 – Ivel 10. (Connor McAlpine and Steve Willets got the Ivel tries.)

.
Ivel U13  0  vs  Winscombe U13  29     Sunday 22nd February 2009

The match against Winscombe was challenging as Ivel tried to hold back a tougher side.  Winscombe started well moving the ball swiftly along their line.  When Ivel got the ball Winscombe speed did not allow Ivel to make as much progress as they would have liked up the field.  By half time the score was 17 – 0 to Winscombe.

The second half commenced with Winscombe getting a quick try.  The final score was Winscombe 29 – Ivel 0.  Ivel’s challenge for the remainder of the season is to put into practice all they are learning during training and to start a game determined to win.

Ivel U13  22  vs  Hornets U13  7     Sunday 15th March 2009

Ivel played their most intense game of the season so far. They were up against a far bigger side in Hornets. Ivel knew they would have to be at their most aggressive best to get anything out of the game.

Within 2 minutes of the kick off, Hornets took the ball into contact, and some how Conner McAlpine emerged on the Ivel side with the ball. He raced down the wing to score. Despite the difference in size, Ivels pack held their own in the scrums, and even managed to push Hornets back. Ivel attacked the rucks and mauls full of purpose and intent, winning turn over ball on many occasions. After a lot of pressure on the Hornets line the ball found its way out to James Mark Robbins, who forced his way over the line to score Ivels second try. Daniel Jarvis converted, leaving the half-time score 12 – 0 to Ivel.

The second half did not start well for Ivel. Within 1 minute of the kick off, Hornets picked the ball up from the back of a scrum and raced through to score. Ivel then set about dominating the contact area and forced the Hornets side back. After one such spell of pressure, Dan Ogden picked the pall up from the back of the scrum and powered over to score.

The aggression from Ivel set the tone for the rest of the match, and after a period of pressure on the Hornets line James Mark Robbins kicked the ball out to the wing for Harry Johnson to pick the ball up and dive over the try line to score. The final score was 22 – 7 to Ivel.

The Ivel side can take a lot from this game. They managed to play with aggression for the whole of the game, and prove to themselves that they can beat any side when they put their minds to it.
