For another match Ivel’s 1XV were not at full strength but a VERY local derby can usually bring out the fire in the belly needed to win a match.
Ivel elected to play against a strong wind in the first half but, unfortunately, straight from the kick-off Sherborne moved the ball swiftly along their backs and went over for an unconverted try. For a while the play was fairly even but then a good break by Ed Mason, followed by good handling amongst the supporting players, allowed Ashley Hellier to go over for a try. The conversion was missed. Sherborne then made full use of the wind and kept Ivel penned in their own half. From a high kick by the visitors, which then bounced awkwardly for the covering players, the Sherborne winger scored a try which was duly converted. Sherborne increased their lead with a penalty. After sustained pressure by the visitors and with Ivel's defence standing firm, Sherborne eventually crossed for a converted try. Just before the break, from a scrum near the Sherborne line, Mike Ellis who had returned to the 1st team following injury, broke away and scored an unconverted try.
Half time
Ivel Barbarians 1XV 10
Sherborne 1XV 22
Unfortunately, the tenacity Ivel had shown in the first half playing against the wind, was not evident in the second half and it was Sherborne who stepped up a gear and scored under the posts. This was duly converted. The one positive play by Ivel was some excellent drives by the forwards, but dropped passes prevented them scoring. For the last part of the second half, Ivel found themselves camped near their own line and eventually Sherborne went over to score a converted try.
Final Score
Ivel Barbarians 1XV 10
Sherborne 1XV 36
Ivel's man of the match was Mike Ellis. The 1st Team has to wait two weeks before they play again because Oldfield Old Boys have cancelled their Cup game at the showground scheduled for next Sunday. |
