Ivel made it two straight wins in 2011, with a hard fought win over Warminster. With the home side facing the strong wind in the first half, they knew they could not afford to concede many points. Warminster went straight on the attack pushing Ivel back with some good kicking from hand and strong running, but the Ivel players were covering the pitch well and making it hard work for Warminster to get a score on the board. It was not long before Warminster got off the mark when they were awarded a penalty within kicking distance, with the kick successfully converted Ivel went straight on the attack and were using their faster backs to gain territory. It was not long before the home side made their mark with the first try of the game, after some strong forward play and quick rucking, Ivel 2nd row Pete Medhurst was able to find a gap in the away side’s defence, with Ash Pippard adding the extras. Warminster knew they had to score some points with the wind in their favour and had plenty of territory but could not find anyway through Ivel’s strong defence, then just before half time Ivel were awarded a penalty in front of the Warminster posts. Kicking into the wind, Ash Pippard was able to guide the ball through the uprights to extended his sides lead.
HT 10 – 3
With the teams changing ends Ivel now had the wind with them and were looking to take advantage and it was not long before the home side had Warminster pinned in their half. After another solid scrum and some quick hands from the backs Ivel’s James Best was able to break through Warminster’s defence and pass the ball to winger Michael Jenkins who easily outpaced his opposite number to cross the line, conversion missed. Ivel did not ease off and pushed the away side back towards their line again. Ivel’s forwards were pushing for a try but were stopped short metres from the line, but with a large gap in Warminster’s defence scrum half Danny Anderson was able to dart over the line for Ivels second try of the half, Ash Pippard adding the extras. Ivel quickly scored another try when another good break though the away sides defence by Paul Mortenson resulted in winger Michael Jenkins collecting the ball just inside his own half. Knowing he had the pace on his opposite number he pinned his ears back and raced off to score under the posts for his second of the day, with Pippard adding the extras. Ivel now held a 29-3 lead. Warminster’s heads did not drop and they looked to get back into the game getting closer to the line, and in a 10 min spell were able to score two converted tries to bring the score to 29-17. With 5 minutes left on the clock Warminster thought they were in with a chance of taking something from the game, but that soon ended when a clever kick from Ivel fly half Pippard to the corner resulted in Pippard outpacing the Warminster defence to score the final points of the day, final score 34-17. Ivel next travel to Westbury.
