Ivel bounced back from recent defeats with an emphatic win against Westbury. After a close contest earlier in the season the home side knew they would have to step up their game to avoid another defeat. Straight from the kick off Ivel applied pressure to Westbury’s defence and it was not long before Ivel were able to open the scoring, after a solid scrum inside the home side’s half Ivel were able to move the ball wide with winger Pete Rose breaking through westburys defence to race to the line, Alex Mcguinn adding the extras. Ivel did not let their foot off the gas and went looking for another score, Ivel’s forwards were working hard to push Westbury back, and to create a solid platform for the backs. Ivel second try came through captain Kris Shore, when after another strong scrum by Ivel the ball came loose out the side, Shore was able to collect the loose ball and force his way over the line, conv missed. Westbury were still trying to play their way back into the game but the home side were shutting down all attacks forcing Westbury to kick to gain territory. After an attempted clear kick by the away side Ivel were able to get the ball and attack with pace resulting with winger Tom Brownhill scoring his first try for the club. Then just before half time Ivel added their fourth try when second row Tom Hone was able to breakthrough the Westbury defence and sprint off to touch down under the post, try converted.

The second half started and Westbury kicked off hoping they would be able to get themselves back in the game, but Ivel received the ball and like the first half went straight on the attack looking to finish the game off, after some more good forward play Ivel were able to get the ball to their faster backs and score their fist of nine second half tries through centre Lee Jones who was able to out pace Westbury’s defence, Alex Mcguinn again adding the extras. Ivels next try came minutes later when prop Neil Jackson FINALLY ended the 14 yr drought since his last try and powered over the line to a large cheer from the crowd and all players, conv missed. Westbury sensed the game was not out of reach but were still working hard to play some rugby but the home side were too strong in the forwards, breaking up Westburys possession, Ivel were now full of confidence and were playing good attacking rugby, leading from the front was man of the match Pete Medhurst who scored two tries, his second a break from the half way line. Ivel did not let off the pressure and were adding a try every few minutes with Paul Mortenson touching down twice, Lee Jones getting his second and hooker Joe Stelmaszyk covering half the pitch to score and finally Michael Jenkins finishing the scoring for the day. After the game manager Ed Mason said “ I was very pleased with the team performance today, after a bad run we were able to bounce back and show great attack sense, all the players stepped up and we were able to shut out all attacks that came our way, hopefully we can take this momentum into the final games of the season” Ivel next travel to Weymouth in two weeks time.
