| Due to the somerset cup Wellington decided to forego their festival and go for a blitz style event and a fine event it was, the main pitch was divided into 3 good sized pitches and all spectators were confined to the stands. Five teams (two from Winscombe & Wellington) were there and the format was that everybody played each other - no prizes - no winners except for rugby!!
again we were fortunate to have three boys, Darren Jake and Toby, who have stepped up from reception and the experience was excellent for them. Mixed with regular under 7's Freddy Ethan Tom Liam Simeon and Rory it was difficult to tell them apart, we played 6 games and enjoyed some brilliant games - our biggest fault being over enthusiasm!! Over crowding the player so that he cannot get a clean pass away which led to knock ons and dropped balls. Running into touch and even mistaking the touch for the try line and placing the ball before the line all lead to missed opportunities, but added to the learning curve.
although it was a long day 10.30 to 2.30 and the boys had to play 70mins of rugby they must be credited for their passion, running and over keeness - frustration when players had to start on the bench and when games finished.
Supporting the runner was superb but we must learn to give the player and ourselves room, receiving the ball close to a tackled player means that the tackler can easily tackle us again.
Defence at times - for instance in the last game against Chard was excellent - the boys talked to each, organised and hassled and pressured their opponents. In other games we almost seemed 'away with the fairies' lacked focus, commitment and inevitably lost games this is something we need to address, as i have said before i want our defence to be tighter than scrooge!
Some superb running from Ethan and Rory, and good running from Tom who was stopped yards short of his first try, it will come Tom just keep running ,don't stop because you "think" you have been tagged wait for the referee to call it.
Good tagging from Freddy, Ethan and Rory and toby Jake and Darren played exceptionally well, musn't forget that this was only their 3rd competetive games!!
i think i would like to mention Tom as i believed that this was the best i have seen him play, his confidence is growing and he just has to believe that he can get past people- don't be scared to go full pelt.
Man of the day however for some amazing running - almost non stop, some dogged defending (i think that he can't wait to start full contact) and a hat full of tries was Liam - well played.
