Well for a morning that started with horizontal rain, the day started a little like nothing was going to happen. The team turned up, never the less and nearly all got to grips with the Teamer site, well done parents for that.
Game 1
Ivels started off with great runs and met the might of the Castle Cary defence which was quite strong. Depending on how the Ivels played we did manage to break their defence a few times and our attack was looking very impressive.
The running game or a passing game, or as we saw today a running game turned into a passing game was very affective and great rugby by the team. With sheer determination and quick thinking by all of the team we scored five very well deserved five tries to Castle Cary’s seven.
Game 2
With tired legs the Ivels rolled out looking sharp and ready for another close game. Our defence was a little shaky in the first game and in the second game was a complete turn around. I thought the defence was amazing and strong. The attack was a little sketchy in places with a few problems with the offside rule but never the less a very impressive attack. The running game turning into a passing game punched holes in a very strong defence and was the reason why both games where so close. Great runs from the Ivels Neo, Thomas and David with great support from all of the Ivel Team, well done. Ivel 3 Castle Cary 5.
I would like on behalf of the U8’s team to thank all the parents for without them the two fantastic games would never have happened. I would like also to thank Castle Cary for putting on a great couple of games.
Summary
Lessons learnt from our first game.
Defending the sidelines & regrouping in defence.
Keeping formation in attack and not bunching up.
Forward running, along with the offside rule.Well done Team.

Well we lost the toss and defended at the start, the defence was spectacular. George was very fast off the line and tagged their No2 straight away followed by Alistair and Charlie, the rest stayed back for another line of defence. Great team work boys. Tor had advanced about 10 feet and the ball was turned over, Thomas as No1 Charlie as No2 supported by Alistair, George and Oscar.
The running game was nothing short of magnificent, as was the support of the parents from the side lines. Charlie burst through the defence as if it was not there in a straight line and got very close to the try line and popped the ball to the waiting hands of Alistair who set the ball down on the try line. What is more impressive was the awaiting team players also supporting the one with the ball, well done.
The second try came much the same way with a few turn over balls and from set play from the centre line. Tor scored two in a row and we returned with three. Tor came back to score another at the end of the first half. Score so far Ivel 5 Tor 3.
Second half we kicked off with another stunning run forward, with full support from the team, and another try. Tor came back with a try, we then scored again. Tor were beaten again by the might of the Ivel defence and quickly had the ball turned over to us. A very quick start and another try to Ivel. Tor for once had broken our defence and scored from a run down the side line. This was a problem because they did it again, Scoring both times. This was a problem for only a short while. We then decided to move the team round, putting the faster people in the team on the outside. This confused the opposition and blocked them in their tracks.
Ivel at this point racked up a definite lead over their opponents and were just waiting for the final whistle that came in at an impressive Ivel 10 Tor 6.
I would like to thank Tor for hosting such an excellent match and will look forward to meeting them at home, and I would like to thank all parents that made it to Tor, well done team.
Summary
Well all I can add at this stage in the season is watch the side lines in defence, off side positions and basically this game proves that running forwards works. We need to get more of the team to run straight and forwards, as the rest of the team get more confident at this. On a positive note, I am amazed with the quick thinking that the team produces especially around the try line; it is also this that scored you the points. Enjoy your victory team, you all deserve it. We will see you at Frome next weekend. |

Well with the clocks going back and the difficulty in finding Frome RFC, we had a staggering 9 strong team. Thank you to the parents who brought the team there, well done.
We won the toss captained by George and chose to attack first. We then scored our first try to the Ivel, Charlie with a straight run. Only replied by a try to Frome, but great defending by Ivel, we did not make it easy at all.
With us on the attack we had yet another try thanks to Thomas with great passing within the team.
Two one became two all, with a turnover ball to Ivel and then turned over again back to Frome. Lots of touch line problems for both sides here.
Then the break we needed. Neo in No 2 position with a strong run got his first try of the game, followed by a turn over ball from Frome which gave us the lead at half time.
At the break we discussed the straight run and not so zigzag. This did improve in the second half. The team seemed a lot more alert in defence and at some stages in the game pushed Frome back every time they where tagged.
Four two became four all, we where almost there but still we pressed on to score another try to have it levelled again five all became five six with try scorers Charlie, Neo and Thomas. (If I have missed any more out I apologise)
Final score Ivel 6 Frome 5
Summary
The one thing that really impressed me with this game was the support of the person with the ball. This was the key. In defence, the team hunted in packs, some would go in for the tag and some would see where the ball was being passed to, one or two would defend the back field in case anyone shot through, only to be tagged if they did. This was first class teamwork well done to you all.
I would finally like to thank Frome for putting on a very close and exiting game. |

It was a wet & slightly cold morning up at Bridgewater, we had a healthy squad of 8 all raring to go, so thanks to the parents for making the effort. We were lucky to have a couple of games against a very well drilled side.
Game 1
Captained by Charlie, Bridgewater won the toss and immediately ran at the heart of our defence with some good tagging being done by all. Ivel managed to keep them out, until a good piece of inter-passing by Bridgewater finally broke through. Straight from the restart Ivel attacked with some good hard straight running and good supporting play, managing to break through their lines. Throughout the game it was to & fro, with great attacking play and defence by both teams. Unfortunately Bridgewater got the upper hand in the last minute to snatch the win from us.
Final score Bridgewater 10 – Ivel 8. Scorers Oscar 2, Charlie 3, Alistair 1, Thomas 1, & Matt 1.
Game 2
This time captained by Oscar, Ivel went out for revenge. Ivel started well with again some good hard running and good support play, we managed to cross their line for the 1st try. Bridgewater came at us again with some great running and passing of their own, with our defensive line holding strong, and some great tagging by all. With some quick running from Bridgewater they managed to stretch out a lead. As the clock ticked down spirits stayed high and Ivel continuously attacked their line. Great running by Neo, Charlie, Thomas & Alistair, with some great tagging by all.
Final score Bridgewater 9 – Ivel 6. Scorers Alistair 1, Neo 1, Thomas 2, Charlie 1 & Matt 1.
Summary
Overall, 2 fantastic rugby games to watch with great running, tagging & inter-passing by both teams. Well done to everybody who played.
Areas to work on:
1 – Not bunching around the player with the ball, give him space to pass to the support runners.
2 – Keeping our defensive line nice & straight.
3 – Defending around the fringes & close to the touch line.
Our thanks to Bridgwater for hosting such an exciting match. |

Thank you all for turning up to the 1st Ivel Barbarians Rugby Festival. Although a grey, wet & murky Sunday morning it was ideal weather to play some quality rugby games.
Being a strong & determined squad we had our sights set on taking home the trophy, we just had to stay cool & play the flowing rugby that we were capable of.
I’m not going to break down each game; I’ll give a general summary of how our tournament went.
Throughout all the games the standard of attacking running & the line breaks we made through the opponents defensive lines were fantastic. The quickness of passing the ball once tagged, the support play, lack of bunching around the player was brilliant.
Against these teams our defence had to be firm, we had to get quick tags & defend around our fringes; everybody did this very well, only occasionally letting fast runners get around us.
Overall it was a fantastic team effort & even though we didn’t win it was a very successful tournament. It allowed us to put all our skills into practice, and can be used as a stepping stone towards our next tournament in March.
Finally, special thanks goes to all the parents for helping out, without your support the tournament would not have been such a success. If anybody took photos of any of the games & would like to have them displayed on the team webpage can you please email them to Stuart?
A special thanks to our, two Ref Assistants for not just running the scores to the officials, but also for being lines persons and keeping score.
We on behalf of Ivel Barbarians would like to thank all the teams that took part as with out them there would not be an exciting tournament, thank you.
Games: W (1), D (1) & L (3) – points 4
Try Scorers: Neo 7, Alistair 6, Matt 3, Oscar 3, Charlie 2 & George 1 |

I will start by thanking all of you for an excellent turn out, We were a full team with lots of subs waiting on the line to replace tired legs.
The first match.
Before starting the match we practiced a few new moves and tried them out on Frome.
The new moves were kind of a criss-cross approach with stunning results. At half time we saw the points leading at 4-3 to Ivel and spirits where high. With the new moves plus the relentless defence we were doing well. The second half we dug in and sent the game into a mixture of fast forward runs and the new moves. The defence was perfect, turning the ball over to us on numerous occasions. The final results 4-9 to Ivel.
The second match
The second game was a very fast game and although we tried our best we could not match the sheer determination of Chard. Although I was not pleased with some of the tactics of Chard. (Well the ball was on the ground much more than normal? I will say no more.) Anyway a very fast paced game enjoyed by all. Great quick thinking by Thomas that mustered a try from the other end, whilst Chard were floundering with the ball. Final score was 4-9 to chard.
I on behalf of The Ivel Barbarians team I would like to thank Frome and Chard for an enjoyable two games of Rugby.
Summary
Lessons learned from today, holding the ball differently stops the ball being knocked out of your hands, we need to work harder on our new moves that we call “Arrows and Spears” our criss-cross move. Once we perfect that we will have a good chance of being unstoppable. We also need to work on our touch-line defence and holding formation in defence.
Well played all and see you all at bath Rec next week.

Firstly a big thank you to all that made it to the far reaches of Somerset, well done.
After a bit of a slow start our matches got underway. With only six players out of twelve making it to Bath, we knew we would have our work cut out. This situation is always a problem when matches are so far away.
First match Ivel v Cheddar.
Cheddar won the toss and elected to attack first. With all our might we defended and although we gave them the try, we did not make it easy for them. Then us in attack with Neo at No2 he flew down the field to put the score at 1-1.
Then Cheddar in attack and a turn over ball had us in the lead by 2-1.
Then Cheddar got wise and scored another try, breaking through our defence. As Simon said “we have to keep our line”. Much of the match was mostly even, but a good try from George, Neo, Mat, Charlie and Oscar left the score a stunning 8-8. Good runs and defence from all that played and what a game to be a part of, well done.
Match two Ivel v Bath
This was the game most teams would fear, the mighty Bath, home of some great Rugby legends.
We went out strong in mind and feeling great. The players all focused and dug in. Spirits where high and all now waiting on the whistle. Bath to attack first and were nailed at the start by our defence. Tag two tag three and finally a break for Ivel with a knock on. Ivel on the ball great run for Neo, only to fall at the last, causing a knock on at Baths try line. Not bad Neo it was a good strong run, I know you did not get your try, but you gained a lot of ground. Bath replied with a zigzag run making short work of all defence and scored the first try. We were in attack, Mat number two went for a straight run, now with Bath closing in on him goes right across the face of the try line and scores his try. 1-1.
Bath to attack, defence was a little tired at this stage and the team starting to drift away from position and at this point it was every man for himself. Bath saw a way through and scored. At half time we rested and dug deep and went out all guns blazing. Lots of tries from Oscar, Mat and Neo. Bath also scoring well. This was one tough game of Tag Rugby. Both teams doing extremely well and a very high standard indeed. 5-5 final score.
Our thanks to Bath for hosting the event and will certainly look forward to playing you again.
Summary We need to hold the line in defence, and get some more forward running. This will become apparent in the years to come but get it under your sleeves now and it will be a lot easier later. If we go forwards we will win, if we go side ways we will not win. That’s all of my of my summary for today.
I would just like to say a well done for all the players of today, drawing with Bath Is a great achievement and I was so proud of all of your efforts, well done.

Well done to everyone who turned up at Chard on a very wet and windy Sunday morning, not actually knowing if the game was going to be on or not due to the weather conditions and the poor state of the pitches. A decision was made and the game would go ahead, but with only having 5 players, Chard sportingly lent us 2 of their players to even the numbers.
With George as captain, we won the toss and went on the attack, with the ground resembling a swamp, the quality of running, passing and support play from everybody was fantastic, which ended with Charlie scoring in the corner. Chard came straight back at the Ivel defence but even with some brilliant tagging Chard managed to break through and score.
Straight back on the attack with some weaving runs from Thomas, Louise & George & great support play from David we again crossed their line for another couple of tries.
The second half resembled the first with some great passages of play by both teams and some determined defensive tagging by Ivel. A fantastic break down the line by George would have ended up with a try in the corner only to be disallowed as his tag fell off mid gallop, unlucky George!!.
Overall, very well played by everyone, it was a hard game, only made harder by Chard being constantly offside, and pulling the tops of our players as they where attacking.
Final score 6-4 to Chard
Still need to work on our defensive line, keeping straight and coming up together, but it will come with practice!! Well done to all. |

Thanks to all parents who made it through the new road layout and found Weymouth RFC. The weather was hot and the day was perfect for a real good days rugby. The team of eight strong was charged up and ready to do their best, this being the last couple of games of the season.
The first of the games was Teddington, a real tough game against a real quick team. They moved the ball very sharply but Ivel had done their upmost to give them the hardest time. The defence, although bunched up, took enough tags to rock their attack. Some great runs by Charlie and Alistair with their quick thinking combo at the line, got the first try. Then Teddington replied with a fast run, quick pass and a try. This surprised all of us as it was so slick. But then the galloping Taz Aka Neo bolted down the line to score the second try. The game went backwards and forwards and was a great game to watch and was probably one of the fastest, hardest matches we have played. The only thing that stopped us winning was a disallowed try because the cones where not placed on the white line. This was addressed after, score Ivel 5 Teddington 6. (if I have forgotten names I apologise they were so fast)
Game two: Ivel v Teddington again.
This after the first game was even faster, harder and seemed even longer, although it was the same. The Teddington second team seemed a lot slicker, passing the ball down the line like it was well drilled, but again we made it hard for them to get to the try line. The only thing that let our side down again was bunching in defence. This was clear when Teddington made a long pass and had a clear run at the line. Having said that we did make the same move back with Taz (Neo) having another good run to the line. Great tries by Charlie, Mat, Oscar, Neo and again if I left you off the list I am sorry. Ivel 5 Teddington 6
Game three: Ivels v Weymouth.
The hosts were again, just as good a team as Teddington. We had our work cut out. Legs tired and began feeling the last two games although the team was in high spirits. Ivel went out knowing this is finally it, the last U8’s game of the season. The way they played as a team with the years bonding between them showed. They played like a team. Quick slick moving, great defending, everyone played a part in the game. George had a try disallowed which everyone thought was unfair, but the ref decided that he stepped out. Never the less, it was a fantastic run from the teams “Dark horse” (George). He never smiles, cheers or gets excited, even when he gets a try he just walks back as though nothing happened, and that is just so cool. Well another close game, even at half time noone could know which way it was going to go. Weymouth scored, we scored, and they scored and so on. Well by the end a stunning three all Ivel and Weymouth. I must say a great game; it was so exciting each team played a great game.
Our thanks to Weymouth, for a fantastic tournament. Also our thanks to Teddington too. A great final finale, to a great year’s rugby, well done.
Summary
You know what I shall say but I will say it any way, Run straight, stay off the side lines and respect your team, Oh and your coach. (ah that surprised ya) well played. What a great team and my thanks for the whole year with you all.
Try scorers: Neo 3, Charlie 3, Matt 3, Alistair 2, Oscar 2 & David 1
