Ivel stumbled to a 1 point defeat away to Westbury in a game they could have won themselves.

After other previous close encounters Ivel knew what to expect from the home side and Westbury did not disappoint, attacking aggressively through their forwards and keeping Ivel in their half with plenty of kicking from Hand.

Ivels defence was being tested and after several penalties conceded, Westbury were able to convert in quick succession. Two penalties to open up a six point lead.

Ivel now started to play some of their own rugby and were pushing to get back into the game. Some good forwards play were pushing westbury back then Ivel full back, Sean Houghton was able to find a gap and run around Westbury’s defence and sprint to the line for a try. Conversion missed.

With Ivel back in the game both teams were looking to push for a try and it was Westbury that scored next after a gap was created in Ivel’s defence. This meant Ivel now needed a converted try to get in front. Ivel dug deep and through some strong running were able to, again, get into Westbury’s half and after some good handling winger Pete Rose was able to cross for a try and bring his team within 1 point.

With the conversion missed Ivel needed to score again and went on the attack, but with little time left it would be hard. Ivel dug deep and pushed for the line but Westbury were able to slow the ball down and hang on for the win.

After the match, manager Ed Mason said, ‘We were unlucky not to come away with a win today, we missed a few points for the posts and played some good rugby but credit to Westbury, they came out with a game plan and stuck to it.’

Ivel came out on top of this close game with league leaders Weymouth.  After coming off the back of a defeat Ivel knew they were on for another tough game and Weymouth did not disappoint.

Weymouth got off to the better start and were soon pushing Ivel back with good use of their forwards, but Ivels defence was well organised and holding out. Weymouth then won a lineout deep in Ivels half, using their bigger set of forwards. Weymouth were able to maul their way over the line for their first score. Then after a even spell of play Weymouth again won a lineout and were able to power over the line to open up a lead.

The home side were forcing their way back into the game, stretching Weymouth with some kick passing and open running. Ivel soon got their reward when centre, Matt Corrigan was able to break through a gap and with the half nearing its end both sides were looking for one more score and it was Weymouth that got that score when after a series of penalties by Ivel, Weymouth were rewarded with a penalty in front of Ivels post which they elected to kick for three points.

Ivel, knowing they had to up the level to win this game, did not disappoint. As the second half started Ivels forwards were covering the whole pitch making tackles and turning over the ball. After a good possession of play second row Sam Reeves was able to power over the line with Alex McGuinn adding the extras. Ivel soon took the lead when a good break resulted in Paul Mortensen stepping through Weymouths defence to touch down under the posts.

Ivel were now playing with confidence and kept testing Weymouth defence. Ivel extended their lead through winger Pete Rose who was able to out pace the vistors defence and touch down in the corner. Conversion successful. Weymouth shocked, by the sudden change in score were soon back in the game when their centre was able to burst through a gap to score under the posts. With the conversion successfully taken, this set up a tense final 10 minutes with Weymouth trying to force their way to the line, but Ivel were digging deep and working as a team were able to shut out all of Weymouths efforts to hold out for a well deserved win.

After the game Ivel Manager, Ed Mason, said “ That was a fantastic result today against a good side. We seemed a little off the pace in the first half but after the break all the lads worked hard for each other and we played some great rugby. Hopefully we can take this into the rest of the season”.

Ivel travelled to Salisbury for the last game before the Christmas break, going for a vastly improved performance from the previous week!!!

Things didn't start well with a misplaced pass on Ivels try line gave the home side an easy score, which was also converted.

Ivel seemed to have all the possession but were snatching at every pass. 15 minutes had gone before Ivel finally got on the score sheet. Slick handling put Sean Houghton into a gap, he then out paced 3 defenders to score under the posts. Try converted.

This was the spark that was needed!!! The forwards were linking with the backs and Ivel were attacking from within their own half, two more tries through Ash Dyhouse and a second for Sean Houghton. Both converted.

Ht 21-7

The second half started as the first ended, Ivel were now playing their best rugby of the season, every player was hungry to play their part in the build up to 5 second half tries, 2 being converted.

The final score Ivel 50 Salisbury 7.

Ivel coach Martin Cole said " after last weeks performance it was important to prove to ourselves that it was a one off!! Although we scored 8 tries through some great handling and support, it was our defence I was especially pleased with, Salisbury had the ball on several occasions in dangerous positions but we worked hard to shut them out"

Try scorers   Stretch 3,  Zim 2,  Matt,  Andy,  Ash

Tom 5 conversion
